binary file vs flat file - all the same - ;ENV= couldn't care less, it's the contents that count. escape chars are easy - just swap some in-active character into their places and a TEXT editor works fine. But there are some sequences which have binary numeric parameters; doing insertion and deletion (with wrap) can be quite valuable. files containing bit-mapped signatures are tough, too, as the characters therein are quite random.
