The word "nibble" came on with packed decimal, first used on the IBM
360 some 35 years ago.  Each decimal digit in PD requires 4 bits, a
"nibble".

BTW, I programmed (in SPL) a heavy duty POS system on the Series II.
Yes, memory and disk space were scarce commodities.  I stored all
dates in Calendar FORMAT TO SAVE SPACE.
