You might want to check the HP RC (either the electronic
or the other one)... I vaguely recall a patch for libc to
bring C fopen() in line with MPE FOPEN() regarding the
max file number...

(on the other hand, I sometimes wonder why an application
might want to work on 1000 +/- n concurrently open files)
