You can use "ioscan -fnC disk" for a rough equivalent of DSTAT - or sam.

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you mean by "renaming volumes and
mirrored volumes", but .... you can rename file systems, and/or logical
volumes, but you need to do that with various logical volume specific
commands and unix commands. You cannot rename logical volumes with sam.

Yes, but it's an option. The product you need to manage and configure DTC's
is DTCMGR-UX. If you already are using Openview DTC manager, you do not
need DTCMGR-UX. Included with all HP-UX systems is software that allows
terminals and printers to communicate with DTC ports (ddfa, ocd software).
But you need either openview DTC manager or DTCMGR-UX to configure the
actual DTC's.

Not really.

SYSGEN is used to configure system I/O devices, as well as system operating
parameters.

In HPUX, I/O configuration is done automatically upon system boot (This is
a really nice feature of HPUX that is not available with MPE) - although
you may need to first add specific drivers to the kernel before the
autoconfig is done properly. This can be done with sam.

Systm tables configuration can be done manually with various system
commands, such as system_prep, mk_kernel, etc. - or more easily via sam.

Think MPE command files rather than UDC's. HPUX has command files, more
commonly referred to as scripts. Logon UDC's are implemented via
specfically-named command files, /etc/profile, .profile, etc which are
executed at logon time.

Sam can guide you through many otherwise laborious tasks. There really is
no MPE equivalent to sam that I can think of. It really is a fabulous
system adminstration tool which can assist you with most common sysadmin
ativities - such as setting up printers, terminals, kernel configuration,
users and groups, volume groups, logical volumes, file systems, etc. etc.

The book I always recommend for the new HPUX system administrator is:

HP-UX System and Administration Guide by Jay Shah, McGraw-Hill, ISBN
0-07-057277-1.

There are also numerous Unix text books published by Oreilly and Associates
(www.ora.com), and various magazines, such as hp-ux/usr, from Interex, and
HP Professional. Sys Admin and Unix Review are other useful Unix references.
