Dr. Betsy Darken and Mr. Robert Wynegar have been awarded a $27,000 grant
from the Tennessee Higher Education Council to fund a workshop series for
K-12 teachers in Bradley, Hamilton, McMinn, Polk and Rhea Counties. Dr.
Darken and Mr. Wynegar will help these teachers improve their teaching of
problem solving, algebraic and proportional reasoning, and geometric
applications. Participants will attend five all-day sessions during the
spring 2000 school year, followed by two all-day sessions in early summer.

In the first five sessions, teachers will be involved in hands-on
activities, exploring the connections between arithmetic, geometry, and
algebra via guided discovery and small group interactions. In the last two
sessions, teachers will discuss the activities and materials that they have
developed to use in the classroom. During the workshops, the participants
will be trained to use the TI-73 graphing calculator, and they will become
familiar with accessing the web site for the project, a site developed by
Dr. Darken and Dr. Wynegar.

Please join us in commending Dr. Darken and Mr. Wynegar on this important
work!
