SPRING 2000 COURSE OFFERING IN WOMEN'S HISTORY
(Please inform students)
History 499r-001: Women and Work in England and Europe
In this course we will investigate the economic contributions of women in
pre-modern Europe. We will look at the work of townswomen, rural women,
professional women such as midwives and guildswomen, and the role of
noblewomen in managing castles and estates. We will explore how housework and
childcare have changed over time. And we will examine the effects of
capitalism and industrialization on women's work. We will conclude by looking
at certain types of "non-traditonal" work such as witchcraft and prostitution.
