It turns out, as I suspected, that I misconfigured something in NMMGR when I
changed the domain name in the NI screen. With a somewhat red face I have to
admit I thought NMMGR wanted the same thing as the reslvcnf.net.sys file;
i.e. "paccoast.com". What it really needs is the fully qualified machine
name, in this case, "gonzo.paccoast.com". I made the change, bounced the
network, and everything worked: DNS name resolution, Samba, and Apache (I
probably did not say that Apache was also failing earlier).
Actually, not everything worked, but few people probably use the HPDARPA
server job. And, while Samba worked, it seemed to take much longer to
connect to a share. Both these problems were solved by adding an A record to
my internal DNS which says:
localhost 127.0.0.1
This greatly sped up the process of mapping a drive to a samba share and
solved the problem with the HPDARPA server job.
Thanks to everyone, including several engineers at the RC, for your help.
John Burke
