A student and I made a trip to Nashville yesterday to express our
appreciation to Sen. Ward Crutchfield for his courageous vote in the
finance commmitee that allowed the new/revised tax proposal to get to the
floor. We also asked him what we could do to help. He suggested the
usual, of course, but things that those of us who believe that tax reform
is essential often fail to do--talk with your friends, write letters to the
editors of papers, write letters to senators and representatives.
The "no tax" folks are out in full force. It's hard for many of us to
speak out positively for any tax reform even when we know that something
must be done to prevent the incredibly bad state of funding for education
in Tennessee from getting even worse. If we are to have any influence on
this issue, however, now is the time to speak up.
