I've had to retry several times, but ultimately it finally sends the results and
gets a new work unit to crunch.  It seems to be worse on my home PC which
uses the Dial-up connection than those inthe office directly connected to
the internet.

  I agree that HP could seize an excellent marketing opportunity here by
providing the backend to the largest distributed computing project ever.
That is assuming they are willing to throw whatever resources are required
at it in order to not look bad :)
