What version of the OS? [presuming 6] There is a "known problem" with
particular revisions of the DDS drive's FIRMWARE -- if it is TOO RECENT, it
WILL NOT WORK! This is documented in the installation manual, and
unfortunately "making things work" is a total PITA.

-- if you are ALREADY on 5.0 [or maybe it's 5.5] HP throws you another
curve: for most sites (*) it is IMPOSSIBLE to determine the firmware
revision of the tape drive as the "utility" within SYSDIAG that determines
the rev level is now "password protected" [* I say "most sites" as I suspect
many sites don't even realize they've "lost" this particular utility to the
password demon...]

-- once you've determined the tape drive's firmware is "too recent", you
pretty much have to have a hardware call to swap out the drive [and a second
hardware call as they'll likely bring another drive with the "wrong"
firmware...] Part of the Sysdiag utility [that is now locked] is supposed
to back-date the firmware, but I didn't have success with this -- it said
everything was proceeding normally, but the "change" never took place.
Likewise, there is a "magic tape", that when inserted into the drive, causes
the DRIVE itself to attempt to update with the version of the software on
the tape [also "backdating" it...] Again, the magic failed for this magic
tape...
