According to the book I have, the CURRENT-DATE FUNCTION returns something that looks like this:

YEAR 9(4)
MONTH 9(2)
DAY 9(2)
HOUR 9(2)
MINUTE 9(2)
SECOND 9(2)
HUNDREDTH 9(2) VALUE 0.
GMT-OFFSET X(1)
GMT-HOUR 9(2)
GMT-MINUTE 9(2)

So it would appear the year is actually 4 digits and would contain 2000 as the value.
