I've seen this on other printers and they worked just fine.  You could even
ftp Postscript or PCL files to them and they would automatically figure out
what mode to use.  I'm not sure how the JetDirect card is supposed to handle
it.  Do you have a manual describing the process?  Is there a RAW port?
