You could be running into the infamous "Media Recognition System"
problems.  Old non-MRS tapes (they do not sate "Media Recognition
System" on them) were not compatible with "MRS" tape drives.  When a
non-MRS tape is put in the drive it may be miss identified.  I once
think I saw an explanation about how to disable Media Recognition, but
it seemed to be quite difficult.

Then again I could be completly wrong.
