When I was first exposed to COBOL in the very early 70's, I was taught that
COBOL stood for COmmon Business Oriented Language. Since it is now approaching
30 years, I am willing to consider that my memory is failing, however this
snippet of information has been refreshed many times over the years.
Check out: http://www.thinkage.com/expl/cobo/expl.html
Also here is a brief history of COBOL:
1951 FLOW-MATIC development started by Grace Hopper
1955 FLOW-MATIC goes into regular use by U.S. Navy - major influence on COBOL
1959 First meeting of a group who want to create a common business language
1960 First COBOL compiler; standard COBOL-60
1974 ANSI standard (ANSI-74 COBOL)
Admiral Grace Hopper was one of two technical consultants on the CODASYL
committee.
The US Navy named a ship after her, the USS Hopper DDG-70, a guide missile
destroyer. Very advanced.
Kind regards,
Denys. . .

That's the way I learned about COBOL. For a minute I thought my memory bank
was
failing me again. :)
