I have a model 4440 and had similar problems, but they were sporadic.  HP
was no real help either on-line or by phone.  Seems like when they can't
figure out a problem they recommend reloading all the software from the
recovery disc.  I decided not to go that route, due to all the software and
hardware I'd added to the system.

My system has the SIS 5597/98 video card.  I did a check of the SIS website
(WWW.SIS.TW) and found a patch posted for the video bios of this card.  I
downloaded it, and haven't had a problem with anything since.  No lockups,
blue screens of death, etc.  Nada.

If you have this card, check the vendor for this update.  HP doesn't have
anything listed on their support site.  I did notify them of the patch, but
didn't get a response other than their canned "thanks for posting".

Hope this is of some help to you or others with the above mentioned video
controller.
