Meningitis information from Student Health Service-
Meningitis among college students has recently been in the media spotlight.
A few facts for faculty and staff members that may encounter questions
from students and/or parents:
*Outbreaks remain rare, but they have occurred more frequently in recent
years, and several have affected college populations.
*The risk of meningoccal disease in dorm students has been found to be
between 3-12 fold greater than the general population.
*Meningitis is transmitted from person to person via nasopharyngeal
secretions. Close contacts,ie, persons who have had intimate, household,
or day care contact with an individual with disease are at increased risk.
*Menomune is the vaccine that provides immunity to meningococcal disease
caused by groups A, C, Y, and W-135. Currently, groups C, Y, & W-135
comprise 67% of cases.
*Student Health will offer the vaccine to students on request for $60.
