The xvol commands within SYSGEN actually DO serve a purpose.

For example, in most cases, following a system reload or INSTALL, you are
normally required to use VOLUTIL to some or all of your non-ldev1 disk
drives to MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET prior to restoreing directories and files
from backup.

In some situations - where perhaps you do not want to take the aditional
step of invoking the necessary VOLUTIL commands - you can use the
appropriate AVOL commands with SYSGEN to permanently assign certain disk
drives to the MPEX_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET such that a subsequent INSTALL will
not require invokation of VOLUTIL prior to restore.

I am not necessarily recommending this approach - rather just desscribing
its functionality.

There may be some limited situations where this could be a good idea, but,
in most cases, I would not recommend the use of the SYSGEN AVOL command.
