I'm not with HP. Just a poor sysadmin who had the need to figure this out a
few weeks ago.

Thanks for the below. I also spoke to HP on the subject
earlier today and they said that the "default" for HP laserjets
was a recent phenomenon (that started when native mode
network printing was introduced.) This equates to the last
choice (#4) in Doug Werth's reply earlier. It is somehow
keyed on using HPTCPJD as the model ID in IOCONFIG.

HP also told me that it isn't documented anywhere what
the sequences are, although in Chapter 3 of the NM Spooler
Reference manual, there is a plain language rendition of what
the sequences do.

They also said they'd e-mail me when they can dig up
the sequences from the engineers. (Unless Carl below
is the same guy I talked to and he's using his private
e-mail address and not his HP address).

Here is a listing of the default set of escape codes that the 3k will send
to a printer if it does not have an environment file assigned to it in
NPCONFIG. I captured these by putting a line printer in "display functions"
mode. The codes I could find in my manuals are documented. The others???

# Default Configuration
# "EscZ" - Turn off Display Functions.
# "EscE" - Reset the Printer.
# "Esc&l0V - Perform a Top of Form.
# "EscZ" - Turn off Display Functions.
# "EscE" - Reset the Printer.
# "Esc&l1X" -
# "Esc&l+56.25u-33.75Z" -
# "Esc&l1O" -
# "Esc&l6.05C" -
# "Esc&l3E" -
# "Esc&l60F" - 60 Lines of text per page.
# "Esc&a2L" - Set the left margin to 2.
# "Esc&l1L" - Enable Perf Skip.
# "Esc&k2G" -
# "Esc(8U" -
# "Esc(s0P" -
# "Esc(s13H" - Set primary font pitch to 13.3.
# "Esc(s0S" - Select the character style for the Primary font.
# "Esc(s0B" -
# "Esc(s4099T" -
# "Esc&d@" -

When I add a laserjet on the network using IOCONFIG using the HPTCPJD model
id, the printer output defaults to a certain pitch and sets it to landscape.

How do it know?
