Our network manager found a nifty piece of software (Netinfo) that does exactly
that. It sits on a Windows pc (I use NT) and periodically pings addresses. If it
gets no response, an alarm rings. This way, we find out about the problem before
the phones start ringing.

I too have been trying to devise something similar that would ping our
routers
and systems and page me if the ping fails. If there is anything out
there like that, please let me know also.
