What Brian was doing with RJ-45/CAT-5 wiring is very similar to what others
used to do (and some still do, I suspect) with regular phone cable and an
RJ-11. One uses a 25 pin to RJ-11 adapter (Reliable, Black Box, and other
catalogues have them), and run everything to a punchblock through a central
conduit (or as central as one can get).
From the punchblock, another cable can be run to the DTC.
So in essence, Brian is doing with CAT-5, what others do/did with phone
cable - but it does not run over the network until it gets to some type of
terminal server such as a DTC, or as Phil Hutchinson came up with -
Lantronix. I would stay with the DTC though because of the proprietary
protocol. Once you get outside of the DTC environment, it's tough to find a
non-HP terminal controller that can speak the same language. Phil's an
intelligent guy and more than likely knows what can do what - but the 3000
is really picky in this area.
Regards,
Joe
