I'm not a guru, but I've done the same thing you're doing.  
I do a mode 104 DBINFO to get the data item numbers and then 
multiple mode 102 DBINFO's to get the data item names and 
descriptions.

The only thing I can see where you might go wrong is that the 
data item numbers are returned as positive or negative integers 
(positive indicating read-only access and negative indicating 
read/write access), and mode 102 expects the "Qualifier" to 
be a *positive* integer.  I always check the data item numbers 
returned from the 104 DBINFO and convert to positive if necessary 
before the 102 DBINFO call.
