I wonder how many list subscribers
it would take to could go on vacation at once
and overload the list-server with autoreplies,
that end up replying to others' autoreplies,
that end up replying to others' autoreplies,
that end up replying to others' autoreplies,
that end up replying to others' autoreplies,
that end up replying to others' autoreplies,
that end up replying to others' autoreplies,
that end up replying to others' autoreplies,
that end up replying to others' autoreplies,
that end up replying to others' autoreplies,
that end up replying to others' autoreplies,
that end up replying to others' autoreplies,
that end up replying to others' autoreplies,...

The reason you get these notices is because you are the author of a message
that goes out to about a thousand people, more or less pretty much as
standard e-mail. If any of the recipients are on vacation or are out of town
or if their mail distribution system is down, you, as the original author,
have all of their automatically generated responses funneled back to you.

With a thousand people on a list, it's rare when you can post to the list
without getting one or two of these things. In the summer, the number often
jumps to five or ten automatic replies every time you post something.

You just get used to it.
