What kind of error do they get?

If it's a very very very low level error, the hex display (press control-B
on ldev 20) will flash something like "0031" ... which can happen
if your CE never properly updated the stable storage on the machine to
say "I'm MPE capable".  The check was added, IIRC, around the time
of MPE XL 3.0.
