Subject: Re: HP3000 as a Web Server (Document link not converted)

We're using Apache 1.2.5 on MPE/iX 5.5. At time of writing we have this
distribution installed on 6 machines with no real problems encountered so far.
We're building a kind of "Management Information" system that (in theory) will
allow anyone with a TCP/IP connection to the intranet to look at the data we're
publishing.

To get round the performance issue with CGI, we're using an in-house written
background server which services queries, communicating with a lightweight cgi
program (written in COBOL) via a series of message files. This arrangement seems
to work fine. Because the background process(es) hold the databases open, we get
a very significant performance increase. The background process(es) also do very
simple file cacheing (the flat files used for the data extract) so paging
forwards/backwards is fast because the data extract (from a couple of image
databases) has already been done for a previous page. We had to build a garbage
collector into the scheme to get rid of old extract files as they become out of
date but that's not a big overhead.

As regards the posix shell. My only real bugbear is that it is soooo slow. I'm
sure that over time, this will improve, and that the functionality will be
enhanced. Also it would be nice to have an implementation of vi that can use the
cursor keys. I'm getting used to using the Redhat Linux editor (vim) and find
the posix one very irritating in that respect. Apart from that, I'm pleased with
the way things are going.

Regards.

A very good idea!

I use the free Apache/iX package.

Performance for pure HTML code is great. It may be different in using CGI
scripts. But basically it depends on your CPUs capacity.

Configuration is Apache standard - if you can use Samba and PFE it's very
easy but also if you are familiar with vi ( but the POSIX shell should not
hinder you at all ).

We didn't hit any problem so far ... beside one in a bad written CGI.

If you need more information don't hesitate to contact me off-line this
group.

Subject: HP3000 as a Web Server

Hi,
I currently run a web Server on a NT box but would like to use my HP3000
959/200 as the web server for an intranet.
Could anyone who has setup HP3000 as a Web Server please let me know how it
performs and how easy it is to configure etc.
Any comments would be greatfully accepted.
