I don't mind HP trying to estimate when the cartridge would be empty
based on calculated ink usage. That's what Epson does, though their
algorithms appear to work better than HP's. I do mind being unable to
tell the printer to ignore its estimate and print anyway. The printer's
estimate could be wrong, or the NVRAM chip could become faulty and lose
its little mind. I fully recognize that if I override the printer's
carefully-considered judgment in such circumstances, I am taking on the
grave and awesome responsibility for making sure that I don't ruin a pile
of expensive media because the ink ran out. I also recognize that some
people may not wish to undertake such weighty responsibilities, just as
some people prefer not to undertake the responsibilities associated with
sitting in an exit row when flying. However, as with sitting in the exit
row, taking responsibility for one's own media is a highly personal
matter, and I believe that HP should leave the choice up to the
individual consumer.

That's "existence."

Sorry.
