Yes, but it is of no use.  The "no host response" was a tipoff that
the problem had nothing to do with the file *data* (indeed, a subsequent
test showed that the immediate lack of response comes before any attempt
to look at the file's data)...but something earlier in the sequence.

That said, yes...7-bit will often get you past some datacom problems.
