Oops....   You're absolutely correct.  That's what I get for just winging it
off the top of my head without even bothering to think about the details.
Obviously, 7 bits is the space required to store 127 and 9 bits is needed to
store the day of the year since 256 isn't enough.  Oh well, that detail
hopefully doesn't make my original answer too confusing.
