I tried what you suggested, this is what I got:

The file length kept in the LST header exceeds the actual file size.
(LDRERR 622)
Native mode loader message 622
Unable to load program to be run. (CIERR 625)

Whenever you encounter the COMPLETELY UNHELPFUL 517/48 message, do a :RUN
command for more useful info:

        :run perl.pub.perl;info="-v"

Most likely you have a permissions problem on /lib, /lib/lib*.sl, /usr/lib,
or /usr/lib/lib*.sl.
