And you might find ZIP/UNZIP useful for speeding up the transfer.
Especially plain text files should give a good compression ratio.
The InfoZIP freeware is PKZIP compatible and available/ported to
many platforms, inlcuding the HP 3000.

Ooops... there is also compress, gzip, bzip2 and LZW from Telamon.
