I haven't used VM in over a decade, but you should be able to have the VM
machine specify the buildparams as a part of the remote file name:
put file.local file.remote;rec=-228,,f,ascii
This should work on any ftp client that's talking to your MPE machine
(as long as it can tolerate the semicolon delimiter in the remote file name).
