I believe ping is also "smart" enough to strip off the leading zero instead
of treating the octet as octal. This makes for some interesting results
trying to troubleshot why the spooler reports that it can't communicate with
the network printer, yet by cutting and pasting an address from NPCONFIG
into ping it works fine.

Put another way:
PING: 192.1.1.1 = 192.1.1.001
NPCONFIG/telnet/your tool of choice: 192.1.1.1 <> 192.1.1.001

I suppose this really should be considered a bug in ping.
