The long- and short-mapped options for opening a file allow one to treat a file
simply as a large array. HPFOpen hands back a pointer and you simply use that
pointer as a pointer to an array of whatever type you wish. The short-mapped
option, though, has some pretty strict limits (4M/per file, 6M total in the
process) which long-mapped access does not have, though, so it would seem an
inappropriate fix for something like a backup utility.
