I have the pleasure of announcing the results of the 1999 North Callahan
Essay Awards. This year we had nine outstanding submissions for the award.
The judges, however, were able to determine a clear winner. Help us
congratulate Ms Janet Spittler for her essay, " The Acculturation of
Christianity in Japan: The Kakure Kirishitan, Mukyokai, and Makuya

UTC INTERDISCIPLINARY ETHICS LECTURE SERIES

TWO LECTURES ON
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1999

DR.  JAMES RICHARD MENSCH, Professor of Philosophy at St. Francis
Xavier University in Nova Scotia, CANADA, will be presenting the first
lecture of UTC's INTERDISCIPLINARY ETHICS LECTURE SERIES.  His paper:

"RESCUE AND THE FACE TO FACE: ETHICS AND THE HOLOCAUST"

will be presented at 4:00 PM in the FLAG ROOM of the GUERRY CENTER.
There is no admission fee, refreshments will be provided.

DR.  RICHARD JACKSON, UC Foundation Professor of English and Creative
Writing at UTC, will present the second lecture.  His paper:

"AND WHAT ARE POETS FOR?"

will be presented at 5:00 PM in the FLAG ROOM of the GUERRY CENTER
following Dr. Mensch's presentation.  There is no admission fee,
refreshments will be provided.
