Apache can grant or deny access by browser IP address or domain name
(mod_access).

Basic authentication (mod_auth) can be used to require the browser to enter a
user name and password (the user:password pairs are kept in a special flat
file). See /APACHE/PUB/public_html/secure/.htaccess for the magic incantations.

Full documentation can be found at www.apache.org. You could also probably
buy paper manuals from www.amazon.com.
