COUNCIL OF DEANS
January 14, 1999

Approval of Minutes
The minutes of January 5, 1999, were approved.

Minority Graduate Students
Dr. Arfken distributed a brochure on the SREB Doctoral Scholars Program.
This program encourages ethnic minority students to pursue doctoral degrees
and become college-level teachers.  The Council of Deans agreed to
identify, inform, and encourage quality minority students to avail
themselves of this opportunity.

Evening/Weekend Classes
There was discussion of the type of student that would be attracted to
evening/weekend classes.

University Budget Committee Meeting
Dr. Berry provided a summary of the first budget meeting that was held on
Monday, January 11.  The budget process will parallel the process used last
year.  Budget hearings will be open to the university community.
Discussion of budget policies followed.  Dr. Berry reminded deans that
budgets for 99-00 are due to the Provost by Friday, January 17.  The
university budget committee will meet again on Tuesday, January 19.  The
Academic Affairs Division is scheduled to present its budget on March 22.

Provost's Announcements
Dr. Berry announced that the University Technology Committee is reviewing
applications to identify a consultant to help develop a university-wide
technology plan.  He asked deans to be prepared to identify at the next
Council of Deans meeting priority requests for the next round of technology
money.

School/College/Division Reports
Dr. Summerlin announced that the Perspectives '99 Series will be held
January 14-21.  Dr. Berry complimented Dean Summerlin and all the other
people who have worked to put the Perspectives Series together.  It is a
quality contribution to the campus and community.

Dr. Tanner announced that the dedication of the O.D. McKee Chair of
Excellence will be held today (January 14).  Mr. Henry Winkler will be the
keynote speaker.

Dr. Marilyn Willis reminded deans that they should fill out the form,
"Public Service Program Report," when holding events on campus.  This will
allow Continuing Education to accurately report the numbers to the state
and SACS for official campus counts of public service offerings.

Ms. Sheila Delacroix announced that starting January 14, students will be
allowed to print out search data results for 10¢ per page.

A motion to adjourn was moved and seconded.
