This thread is one which reminds me of the headaches of a previous life.

Many years ago I worked for a company developing applications using
Informix.

We delivered these on predominantly ICL & NCR Unix platforms (some SCO and
DOS).

This lead me to believe that there was no such thing as OPEN. Setting up
uucp between identical machines seemed hard enough but the day I tried to
copy our application between 2 NCR towers (different models) and had to use
dd conv=swab to get the stuff back off tape was the day I was sure!

Openness is not a good reason to select a system!!!

Does the system reliably deliver what you need has to be the most important
criteria or is it will it cost me a lot more to stay than to leave?

The cost of course must include all costs including staff retraining etc.
etc.
