I have not been able to connect a "regular" modem to my DTC either...needed
more than 8 pin outs, but I did hook up a Multitech Mux to my DTC as if it
were a regular serial terminal connection and had no problems...for a remote
location with another mux at their end.  Not sure if that helps you at all.
