Hi Michel,

As you have discovered the HP3000 defines the extended ASCII character
set (ASCII values 128 and above) differently to PCs.  The 3000 uses
ROMAN8 (HPROMAN), other systems may use other standards (PC8, IBM8,
ANSI).

FTP will not perform conversion between these character sets, you would
need to write a small program (on either the PC or the 3000) to do this
conversion.  I'd be surprised if such a conversion program didn't
already exist somewhere, but I don't know of one.

The advantage PCLINK2 has is that it knows that it is always
communicating between a PC and a 3000, so it knows it needs to do the
conversion every time.  FTP is used on a multitude of different
platforms, and cannot be expected to know which character set each
platform uses.
