For those who asked about a ".htaccess" file, yes, there is one in the
"network" subdirectory, so you have to get past it to get to the "gif"
subdirectory of "network".  Once I go through the authorization screen, I can
receive files in both "htdocs/network" and "htdocs/network/gif" - I just can't
receive the index page if I specify the "htdocs/network/gif/" subdirectory.
Below is a listing of the ".htaccess" file.

Which brings up the question of the .htpasswd file.  So, below is a display of
its permissions (the "access_control" directory has permissions
"drwxrwxr-x").
I changed the permissions on the .htpasswd file (.htpasswd.network) to 744
(-rwxr--r--) with no effect.
