Not true, last year at this time MS announced Windows 2000 as the follow on
to Windows 98. They stated that Windows 98 was the last version of Windows
9x. Any future Windows product would be based on NT.

What they just did today is the second part of the announcement, Windows
NT was going to be known as Windows 2000 (various flavors.)

With the advent of NT 5.0 and Windows 98, MS brought out the WDM (Windows
Driver Model) where one would only need to develop drivers once.

So in the grand scheme of things, I see it this way:

Windows 2000 (For home PCs, succeeds Windows 95/98, but now based on NT.)

Windows 2000 Professional (For corporate PCs, succeeds Windows NT 4.0 Wks)

Windows 2000 Server

Windows 2000 Advanced Served

Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

There may yet be an announcement for Windows CE. The current version 3.0
AKA Jupiter may be renamed
Windows 2000 Handheld or some such moniker. (This last is just a guess on
my part, I haven't heard anything to support this yet.) MS may be delaying
5.0 to make its release closer to the one for consumers. Also remember
that NT 5.0 is supposed to have a clean migration path from 95/98 to NT.
Something which does not exist now.

With this, MS finally manages to unite all versions of Windows under one
kernel. I for one, think this will make life easier for lots of people.
It will have been a long road, from Windows 3.x and MS-DOS to Windows
2000.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .

Subject: FW: Announcing New Naming for the Windows NT 5.0 Family
Importance: High

Hello Listers,

Well, you heard it here first (I think)

>>> This morning at 9:30am, at a press conference in San Francisco we
are
excited to announce that we will be changing the name of the Windows NT
5.0
family of products. The Windows NT 5.0 product line will be called
Windows
2000. In order to ensure customers are aware that these products are
based
on the Windows NT kernel we will introduce and market the tagline "Built
on
NT Technologies". This tagline will help our many customers who know and
understand the value of NT. <<<

There will be four versions:

Windows 2000 Professional (formerly NT 5.0 Workstation)

Windows 2000 Server - up to 2-way SMP

Windows 2000 Advanced Server - up to 4-way SMP plus large physical
memories.
Current 8-way SMP configurations can also take advantage of this server.

Windows 2000 Datacenter Server - up to 16-way SMP and up to 64GB Memory
depending on architecture.

There were rumors about this -- now it's official.

Best Regards,
Joe (don't shoot the messenger)
