I just moved into an area with cable modems last week and had the cable
modem installed the day before I moved in. The speed has been from a 33.6k
modem dial up, to totally amazing. I pulled down a 6 meg file in under a
minute, but the next day it took me 20 minutes to pull down a 10 meg file.
The cost with the modem rental is $45 per month, the modem rental is $15.
They will let you buy up to 3 ip addresses for you house for just $7.95 a
month each.
If there were any other choices than the $300 motorola cable modem, I would
buy it and get out of the rental, but so far I haven't found anything.

A couple of years ago our local cable company changed-out all the coax for
fibre. They now offer cable modems and direct connections at $50/month,
unlimited usage. Its advertised at > 1MB speeds. While I haven't bitten
yet, a friend has and from what I've seen, it really flies! Clearly a lot
less expansive than the cost of ISDN or your own T1/fractional T1!
