As the 918DX hasn't needed service yet, and given that the
927 is not under contract - I haven't yet experienced this
type of problem. In my prior life though (about 18 months
ago), we still had HP coming onsite to do maintenance.
I still remember in the early 80s though, when Caesar and
Jerry would come out and PM the system and discs and
generally handle anything that came up. I remember being on
the phone with Jerry at 2AM, going through SADUTIL (it really
WAS a "sad" morning). That's when your CE was your partner
(and some still are, I hear) and they would call you at 2AM
and walk you through a minefield, then come in and help you
clear the minefield.
It'll never be like that again - I don't care who the
manufacturer is... IBM couldn't even give that kind of
service anymore, and remain profitable.
