Sorry I didn't respond to this sooner, I just read it a few minutes ago
(I'm *way* behind on my e-mail due to a PC problem). Anyway, I managed
to find our 7980 tape drive users guide...

The user guide doesn't explain all of these numbers, but I can tell you
they are lower-case "e"'s. And it says GCR is High Density Gap Size
(CONF 54) and PE is Low Density Gap Size (CONF 53).
I checked out one of our 7980 drives and got some different results from
yours, but it might give a clue as to what the numbers mean:
Info 1 Displays Info 2 Displays Info 3 Displays
E30 073 W 0e00 WH 0002
5418991 R 0e00 W5 01DC
WD 5e09
Info 4 Displays Info 5 Displays
WH 0000 GCR
W5 000A W 1e07
WD 2e07 R 4e06
PE
W 2e06
R 1e06

My manual also lists configuration changes you may need to make to get
the drive to function the way you want:
(CONF 40) - Enable Change to the Non-Volatile Memory
Choices: ON or OFF
Allows changes to the non-volatile configuration options to be made from
the Control Panel. This configuration must be set to ON before any other
configuration changes can be made. After setting this to ON and then
proceeding to change the chosen configuration, it is recommended that
you reset this configuration to OFF.
(CONF 41) - Auto Online
Choices: ON or OFF
Causes the drive to automatically place itself ONLINE when the TAPE LOAD
sequence completes.
(CONF 42) - Tape Removal
Choices: ON or OFF
This variable controls the ability of the operator to remove the tape
from the drive. When OFF only the host can release the tape.
(CONF 48) - Language [since you can't say where it is...]
Choices: 0,1,2,3
Sets the language used in the Control Panel to display one of the
following:
0 - English
1 - German
2 - French
3 - Spanish
(CONF 81) - Enable Automatic Unload
Choices: ON or OFF
When ON, the tape is automatically UNLOADed when the host places the
tape drive OFFLINE.
HTH, if you need anything else out of the manual, just let me know. I
can copy and fax pages if you promise to pay HP the royalty. ;-)
