If that's really the case, it's scary.

Obviously, it must be true that you can boot from a factory SLT tape which
is sent on 60 meter DDS 1 format - otherwise, how would one upgrade MPE/iX.

So, if Jon's conclusion is correct, those creating SLT's on, say, 120 DDS2
tapes are in for a rude shock if ever dependant on that SLT in an INSTALL
situation.

I sure hope that's not true.

I've seen this problem before - and it was related to the number of devices
on the same channel. By simply turning the power off the uninvolved
devices, which happened to be other external tape devices, the problem was
solved.

Currently, I'm experiencing a similar problem with another customer. Cannot
boot from factory SLT - but CAN boot from SLT created by the tape drive on
the system. Don't have a resolution yet - but I suspect some kind of
hardware problem. The tape drive (1504B) has already been replaced once,
without solving this problem - and will be replaced again this week.

I can say that this particular 918 has an old version of the PDC (version
1.2) which renders the MAPPER function of ODE inoperable. This is SUPPOSED
to be the only issue with respect to PDC 1.2. Perhaps. I'll know more
later and report back.

I sure hope that creating an SLT tape on a DDS3 drive on other than 125
meter tapes does NOT result in an unbootable tape.
