Hmmm. I have only seen that type of error message on MPE/iX systems running
release 5.0 with a fairly old PowerPatch level (efar below C.50.06 or 07).
You did not mention your MPE/iX version and patch level. Can you check your
SHOWME banner and HPSWINFO.PUB.SYS file, please?

Another fairly common reason for things not working properly that I have
encountered in the past was when name resolution (NetBios name to IP address
or DNS name to IP address) was not setup properly on either PC or HP 3000.
Bogus or slowly responding name servers in /etc/resolv.conf for example can
cause a PC to timeout before the server response arrives.

If your PC network uses a WINS nameserver it might be a good idea to tell
smb.conf to use it (wins server = x.x.x.x) -- if your PC network does not
use a WINS nameserver then you may tell smb.conf to have then 3000 perform
this task (wins support = yes) and tell your PC's to use the 3000 as WINS
server, too (somewhere in network neighbourhood properties, I believe).
