Question:
Do you have a crash-and-burn iX box?  If so, I'll see if I can dig up an
old program (15 years old?) that we used on the classic systems.  It used
PM (called GENMSG) to write to the console, so it may crash the system.  It
was used with HP 150 consoles and some old terminals (I don't remember the
model numbers).  On the HP 150 consoles it wrote something to graphics
memory that was visible across the room.  On the terminals it changed some
configuration setting to make the video inverse when there was a reply
pending.  I'll look for it when I get home and see if I still have it on tape.
