The problem you describe is a longstanding one with SORT. It occurs if
the job stream file has a record length longer than the default record
length of the device to which the $stdlist is directed (OUTCLASS).
Besides the workaround you used (redirecting SORT's output to $NULL or a
file with a long record length), the only other one is to make the
record length of the stream file shorter. For example, if OUTCLASS is
LP which is a 132 byte device, then an 80 byte stream file works fine.
