Archiving and compressing on the HP 3000: the Current State of the Art

(Please email additions/corrections to me for the soon-to-be released POSIX
web site).

MOVER (formerly RYDER)
   Found in the TELESUP account, and several versions are in PUB.FREEWARE;
various incompatible versions exist, some of them with the *same* version
number!
Fully preserves MPE file attributes and account structure.

TurboStore/iX Store-to-disc
You have to buy TurboStore from HP.
   MPE to MPE only.
Fully preserves MPE file attributes and account structure.

POSIX tar & compress
Bundled with POSIX on MPE/iX 5.0 and later.
Files can be exchanged with MPE, Unix, and PC's (on the PC, I use "Drag N
Zip" to read/write tar files).
Does NOT preserve MPE file attributes.

GNU gzip
On the FREEWARE tape, part of the GNU utilities ported by Mark Klein.
Files can be exchanged with MPE, Unix, PC's, other platforms.
Does NOT preserve MPE file attributes.

PKZIP
On the FREEWARE tape, contributed by Neil Harvey & Associates
(http://nha.co.za).
Files can be exchanged with MPE and PC's; I don't know about Unix.
Does NOT preserve MPE file attributes.

LZW
On the FREEWARE tape, contributed by Telamon (http://www.telamon.com).
Versions are available from Telamon for a *large* number of platforms.
Preserves MPE file attributes, and some account structure.
