I should point out that this is available on 5.5 via the GR patch MPEKX44C.

Unfortunately nothing about this POSIX filename enhancement is mentioned in
the patch text.  This humongous patch supersedes 43 other patches, one of
which is MPEKX76A which is a PP4 patch which dealt explicitly with POSIX
filenames, and MPEJXQ1 which is the original POSIX filename patch.

MPEKX44C only documents the most recent fix.  IMHO, monster patches like this
should preserve the full list of fixes stretching all the way back to the
root ancestor patch.
