1.  Make sure that the Registry Hack is installed for Encrypted Passwords.
For information on this, see http://dev.sambaix.com which has the registry
keys needed.

2.  Make sure that you are using local DNS, that the DNS tables are up to
date, and that it responds quickly.  Samba is rather picky when it comes to
DNS resolution.  I had the same problem here, and when I put BIND up on a
3000 (there are other ways to do this too), the problem went away.  DNS is
crucial to getting a good connection.
